| Project: Who - The Celestial Toymaker 4 |
[Nov. 11th, 2009|09:14 pm] |
The Celestial Toymaker, episode 4 - "The Final Test" Written by Brian Hayles and Donald Tosh Directed by Bill Sellars
Dodo and Steven have to play a game to rescue the Doctor. The Doctor has been turned invisible by the Toymaker. The Doctor is playing his own game. Dodo and Steven have to win the game they are playing before the Doctor finishes his. If the Doc finishes first, he dies.
The Toymaker is played by the same actor who was Alfred in the Batman movies.
The Doctor outsmarts the Toymaker and he and his friends escape from the Toymaker's clutches.
* * *
Cyril, the guy playing against the companions, is a funny guy. Michael, who played the Toymaker, later appeared in one of the Fifth Doctor's stories.
I'm guessing Hartnell was on holiday during the third episode, and that's why he was invisible for the first part of this episode.

| | "There'll Be Some Changes Made" by Chet Atkins & Mark Knopfler | ] | IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow Between the crosses row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

| Gene's life: Last week on the road |

http://www.unshelved.com/blog.aspx?post=1535 My first week full-time on Unshelved we spoke in 4 venues (California Library Association, Ingram's booth at AASL in Charlotte, the University of NC, and the University of SC (Go Cocks!)). It was a great but exhausting week, with an extreme low point (my daughter being stung by a stingray at Huntington Beach (she's fine now)) and a fabulous highlight (being given the art below by Sarah Dutton, a fan who came out to see us with her parents in NC).
I missed the SoCo shots at Charlotte's Hooters, but did visit ImaginOn again, saw the ImaginOn sandwich menu at the supermarket next door, and then scored an ARC of the new Joe Sacco book at AASL. (If you're ever in that part of NC, try the lamb tibs at the Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant -- thanks to Michael Rockliff at Workman for discovering it and leading the way!)
Survived 6 flights, if you count connecting flights (I do) and now I'm back in the big wet that is Seattle, fighting moss, a cat on my lap, seeing how much I can type before my wrists give out.

| Unshelved News: Facebook + Twitter update |

http://www.unshelved.com/blog.aspx?post=1534 It's been a while since I last mentioned these two. I've been a huge Twitter user forever. Follow me at @billba and be amazed at what I consider funny or interesting enough to tweet. Now that he's unemployed Gene is tweeting a lot more at @ambaum. We all particularly enjoyed the hourly update of his first day working from home. Already his personal grooming habits have taken a hit.
Meanwhile we have almost 3000 fans of the Unshelved Facebook fan page. By becoming a fan there you can get our strips and blog posts in your news feed along with breaking updates from your friend's dog. Lately our fans have also been using that page to comment on strips, which is quite fascinating and potentially a huge time suck for yours truly.
(And yes, my other strip Not Invented Here also has its own Twitter feed and Facebook fan page too)

ON DINING ALONE
Solitary dinners, I think, ought to be avoided as much as possible, because solitude tends to produce thought, and thought tends to the suspension of the digestive powers. When, however, dining alone is necessary, the mind should be disposed to cheerfulness by a previous interval of relaxation from whatever has seriously occupied the attention, and by directing it to some agreeable object.

WATER IN IDIOM
A flawed plan will hold no water; a plan that is exposed might be dead in the water, or risks being blown out of the water; whereas a plan that will stand close scrutiny is watertight--unless someone pours cold water over it. (And even if they do, it might just be water off a duck's back.) To carry water to the river is like taking coals to Newcastle, and while you can lead a horse to water, you can't make it drink. If you have muddied the water, you might seek to pour oil over troubled waters; a true friend will seek always to be a bridge over troubled water. If you fail to keep your head above water, you may find yourself in hot water or deep water (not forgetting, of course, that still waters run deep). You may not take to a backwater like a duck to water--indeed, you may feel like a fish out of water. However, since much water will haveflowed under the bridge, it is advisable simply to tread water and avoid the temptation to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Remember always that blood is thicker than water, come hell or high water.
