Star Trek: the new movie
Saw it this afternoon. There is so much that is wrong with this movie, and yet it's still a lot more enjoyable than several other Star Trek movies I could name. There were even some surprises that hadn't yet been spoiled.

But Kirk's abrupt rise through the ranks, Spock dumping Kirk on Delta Vega, the amazing transporter trick, the way the Enterprise interior reminded me of all those Blake's 7 episodes filmed in old industrial locations, the red matter hooey that didn't even try to come up with a justification, the fact that no one tried shooting at the damn drill until Spock took the spinning little thing for a ride, the really annoying kid Kirk...

In a way, this does to TOS what the new Galactica did to the old, giving it that jittery feel. Except that the original Star Trek didn't suck, and the new Galactica, flawed though it was, showed evidence of putting more thought into things.

And yet: though it just got by on speed and enthusiasm and a few good performances, it was fun. The problem is, this is an origin movie. We won't know what this team is really capable of until they make another movie that has to stand on its own. Oh, and I'm glad that they explicitly made it an alternate timeline, though even that doesn't necessarily account for some of the changes from the old canon in this movie.

Not quite all the changes, unless the divergence began further back than the start of the movie would've had us believe...?

Agreed on this Kirk's ascension, and I hope the next movie gives at least some time over to the consequences of that choice. I could understand giving all the cadets full lieutenancies, mind you...

Yeah, 25 years doesn't seem enough for some of the stuff in the movie. Like canyons in Iowa, for example. Still, the movie left me really wanting to see what comes next.

I figured on the eventual collapse of the Oglalla Aquifer to be a partial explanation, but apparently, there's some serious quarry work going on Kirk's neighbourhood in the here and now as well to consider.

Agree with this, except for the Galactica stuff b/c I've never seen either version.

Wanted to let you know that the blog GalleyCat, which covers the business side of publishing, blogged about ST books and linked to your site.

Having seen how Galactica ended, I'm not so sure I'd recommend it as I would have been a year or two ago. But I think, desite its flaws, it's going to be a major influence and it's still going to be talked about decades from now.

As for GalleyCat, cool, thanks for the pointer.
