You know that 20 albums that shaped my life meme that Kevin Dilmore, Allyn Gibson, and Geoff Trowbridge (and probably others I haven't seen yet) have been doing? I've posted mine on another blog. I don't have a lot of musical interests in common with the folks here on the flist, so music posts here don't generate any discussion. On my new music blog... well, no discussion there either, yet, but at least I'm not clogging your friends pages.

Anyone who's vaguely interested can click on the banner below. It's a random kind of blog, just dealing with stuff that interests me: Richard Hawley, Raphael Saadiq, Frank Sinatra, Vangelis's Blade Runner soundtrack, Dälek, The Big Takeover magazine, etc.

(Anyone recognize where that photo was taken? Laura took it a few years ago.)

Just to be difficult, I'm going to post some comments here instead of on the other blog.

Sex Pistols . . . Never Mind the Bollocks is a must have.

Cocteau Twins . . . my fave is Treasure

Husker Du . . . I was working at B&N back in '94 when the live disc The Living End came out. One day a guy came up to the info desk and asked for help finding a book. I thought "Holy crap, this guy looks exactly like Greg Norton." It turned out we didn't have the book in stock so he ordered it. I had to get his name, and he said, "Greg Norton." It was fun . . . I told him "I thought that was you" and explained I'd just picked up the new CD and had been listening to it over and over and really enjoying it. He said thanks, that it was always nice to hear that people enjoy your work. It was cool. (For people who may not know . . . Husker Du, like the Replacements, came out of Minneapolis, along with the lesser known but amazing Suburbs.)

Jesus and Mary Chain . . . Darklands is another fave of mine

Treasure's my fave Cocteau Twins album, too, but I would never have heard it if not for buying a Modern English LP with a free bonus EP featuring six songs by four 4AD and Beggars Banquet bands (Icicle Works, Death Cult, Gene Loves Jezebel, Cocteau Twins). The CT songs were from Head Over Heels, so I started there and bought Treasure as soon as it came out. And then This Mortal Coil, and Dead Can Dance, and Xmal Deutschland, etc.

Great Greg Norton story.

And, yeah, Darklands is great. It proved the JAMC weren't a gimmick but a real band that was growing and changing.
